Welcome to The Reading Doctor Corby and Kettering.

I am excited to bring this outstanding service to the East Midlands.

I have worked in Education for over thirteen years and a primary school teacher for eight of those years. I have a special interest in children’s reading and children’s mental health. I have taught in Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Key Stage 1 (KS1) – the building blocks for all future learning. As a result of my years of experience working in these age groups, I have a clear understanding of the stages and development of reading, and the barriers that can hinder this. My understanding has been further informed through research and training, in phonics, dyslexia and ADHD. Throughout this time, I have also subsequently developed a greater knowledge and understanding of KS2 reading.

Alongside my primary role of being a class teacher I have also had additional responsibilities throughout my teaching career: PE (interesting!), PSHE and wellbeing, and English. Each of these roles helped to develop and underpin my teaching practice.

Several years ago, I completed two courses; Drawing and Talking – which supports children dealing with social, emotional and mental health issues (SEMH); and Level One and Level Two Theraplay – which supports children who struggle to regulate their emotional responses. I was fortunate to be able to dedicate specific time to support children’s mental health in school and used both methods to help KS1 and KS2 children with their SEMH needs.

Since entering the education sector, I have always had at the forefront the importance of every child becoming a reader. I have a profound love of reading and have done since a young child, reading in the garden, reading while eating, and even reading while walking to school. I have continued to be an avid reader ever since. My wish is to inspire all to have the same love and appreciation of reading. However, I know for some children this is not always the case and indeed, can sometimes be the cause of sadness and frustration. Which is why I not only teach reading skills but nurture self-belief by focusing on their strengths, giving specific praise and encouraging independence. When I discovered The Reading Doctor and the ethos behind it, I knew I wanted to be part of this bespoke teaching of reading venture, and to dedicate myself in order to specialise in teaching this vitally important life skill.

If you have any concerns about your child’s reading development, please feel free to contact me so we can discuss your child’s needs and how I can best support them to become successful, flourishing readers.
