I am delighted to be ‘In my element’ – as The Reading Doctor Stamford:
‘To be in your element is doing something you have an aptitude for that you love.’ Sir Robinson, K. (2019).
I have a passion for working with children and ensuring they have the best chance to succeed in life. Reading is the main gateway to education, but more importantly, to love to read.
I have a Teaching Degree and I began teaching in a mainstream school, following my passion of teaching and supporting children to reach their potential and enjoy learning! After some time of teaching all the primary phases. I pursued my passion to better understand and support children and I completed my Special Educational Needs & Disabilities Co-ordinator (SENDCo) National Award. This has given me specialist knowledge around identifying every child’s strengths alongside barriers to their learning and overcoming those to find the best way for these children to learn, always building on their strengths and interests through a positive relationship.
Later in my career, I had experience teaching internationally and became trained to deliver the wonderful International Baccalaureate® (IB) curriculum. Through this, I developed my skills and understanding of student agency* and hence the magic of student efficacy.*
I am able to teach children one-to-one in a friendly, positive but effective way with sights set firmly on reading for enjoyment and reading acceleration.
I feel so privileged to be the first Reading Doctor in Lincolnshire (My home county) and I love helping children and young people of all ages, become confident readers through this bespoke, one-to-one intervention. This can be delivered either in my Reading room set in my garden cabin or I am also available to set up Reading Doctor hubs in schools to identify and reach those children who require extra support with their reading.
*Student Agency- Agency is when our students have ownership of their own learning and action that comes from that learning.
* Self-efficacy refers to an individual’s belief in his or her capacity to execute behaviours necessary to produce specific performance attainments
