What to expect from a Reading Doctor session
Reading Doctor sessions are engaging, structured and pacey. Reading Doctor pupils begin with an initial assessment to identify existing strengths, gaps and gather information to inform next steps in learning. This series of videos explains the various elements of a lesson and what to expect from your child's Reading Doctor journey.

The Reading Doctor assessment will enable your child's Reading Doctor to know exactly what skills and knowledge your child has at that moment in time. It will also help them:

identify any confusions or misconceptions.

identify any gaps in knowledge/learning.

observe preferred learning styles.

evaluate where your child is at in relation to 'age-related' expectations.

make decisions about how to enable your child to overcome barriers to learning.

get to know your child and reassure them that together you will find a way to make reading easier and more enjoyable.
THE INITIAL ASSESSMENT
The initial assessment shows The Reading Doctor everything they need to know about existing strengths and identifies points for improvement.
WRITING
At The Reading Doctor we understand that reading and writing go hand in hand. Handwriting is integral to Reading Doctor sessions.
LETTER & WORD WORK
The Reading Doctor sessions break reading down into the smaller parts to help pupils really understand the construction of words and the nuances of the English language.
FAMILIAR BOOK
Familiar books build reading confidence and help pupils to feel secure and capable with their new reading skills.
NEW BOOKS
New books are carefully selected to address the teaching points noted from previous sessions. Children are challenged at a level where they feel secure to develop their reading skills.
CONTINOUS LEARNING
Each Reading Doctor pupil has access to carefully selected software to help them continue learning outside of their Reading Doctor sessions.
