Hello, I'm John!
I'm proud to lead The Reading Doctor Beckenham, where I support children to become confident, motivated readers through bespoke 1:1 literacy sessions.
After completing my PGCE in Early Years Education in 2012, I focused my teaching career on supporting children with special educational needs and those at risk of exclusion. As Literacy Coordinator, I saw just how many barriers children faced when learning to read – and the life-changing impact the right support could make.

Why I Became a Reading Doctor
One of my proudest moments as a teacher was revamping the school’s literacy curriculum to better suit our learners – securing funding for a new library and helping children rediscover books as something to enjoy, not endure. I also trained as a Level 3 Forest School Leader, using outdoor learning to build confidence, self-esteem and emotional resilience.
I worked alongside Deborah in this environment and witnessed the incredible impact of The Reading Doctor approach. Children looked forward to their sessions and made visible progress. When the chance came to become a Reading Doctor myself, I knew it was the perfect next step.
