The Reading Doctor

Hello, I'm Deborah!
I’m Deborah Salsbury, founder of The Reading Doctor. Since launching the first Reading Doctor programme in 2012, my mission has remained the same – to ensure every child, no matter their starting point, can become a confident, successful reader.
I qualified as a primary school teacher in 1993 and began my career in Bromley, Greater London. Over the years, my passion for inclusive education led me to focus on group interventions and specialist support, culminating in my training as a Reading Recovery Teacher at the Institute of Education in London.

Why I Became a Reading Doctor
As a teacher and a parent of a child with dyslexia, I saw how many children were being left behind – not because they couldn’t learn, but because they weren’t being taught in the way they needed. Reading is the gateway to all learning, and I felt strongly that more needed to be done to help struggling readers feel capable and proud of their progress.
In 2012, I founded The Reading Doctor – a bespoke 1:1 intervention programme for children who find reading difficult. By using high-quality, dyslexia-friendly resources and teaching tailored to the child, I’ve seen countless pupils transform their reading ability, confidence and self-image as learners.
